And, when you’re behind the wheel of a Thrifty rental car, it’s a trip made easier and more affordable. Let’s dive a little deeper into the Catlins!

Dunedin: History Meets Coastal Charm

Dunedin is where the journey should begin. With its Edwardian architecture accompanied by ocean views, you may be forgiven for wanting to set up camp and stay here instead! While you’re in town, check out Larnach Castle (the only castle in the country!), take a stroll along St. Clair Beach, and don’t forget to fuel up on coffee and food at local favourite, The Perc

Nugget Point: Sunrise and Sea Lions

In about two hours from Dunedin, you’ll reach Nugget Point. Here, take an easy 20-minute return stroll towards the Nugget Point Lighthouse, which is perched on top of a rugged cliff 76 metres above sea level, then take in the view of the ‘Nuggets’—a collection of huge, jagged rocks poking out of the water. Along the way, keep an eye out for fur seals, sea lions and lions.

Purakaunui Falls: Fall in Love at First Sight

Purakaunui Falls are one of the most photographed waterfalls in New Zealand. After a quick 10-minute walk from the carpark, all the way to this three-tiered cascade, and you’ll understand why! Take a moment to admire, with and without your camera, then jump back on the road feeling refreshed.

Curio Bay: Penguins and Petrified Forest

Continue further south to Curio Bay, where a petrified forest has been waiting for 180 million years. At dusk time, keep an eye out for the local yellow-eyed penguins (hoiho), which is one of the rarest penguin species in the world! This stop is sure to satisfy your flora and fauna fascination!

Slope Point: The Southernmost Tip of the Island

For a place that’s out of this world, at the end of the world, stop by Slope Point. The landscape here is simply stunning all around, with rolling hills and a jagged coastline, but it’s the ‘Trees of Slope Point’ that’ll really stick in your memory. Over the years, the wind in this area has been so consistently harsh, that these trees are permanently leaning in one direction—appearing as though they’re blowing in the wind. It’ll stop you in your tracks, before you make tracks to your next destination.

Invercargill and Beyond

To cap off your Catlins road trip, stop by Invercargill. For a dive into the area’s motoring history, pay a visit to the  Classic Motorcycle Mecca, then grab coffee, brunch or lunch at Batch Café, before heading back or continuing along the Southern Scenic Route towards Te Anau and Fiordland
