Whakatāne
Your journey starts in the town of Whakatāne, close enough to make day trips to both Tauranga and Rotorua, yet far enough removed from the city to feel like a coastal paradise. With views of Whakaari / White Island in the distance, and impeccable sunrises and sunsets, it’s a postcard-perfect holiday destination. For adventure across the sea, embark on a guided tour of the Moutohorā / Whale Island wildlife sanctuary. The Island is uninhabited, and is a protected pest-free environment, meaning native wildlife is in abundance. Depart from the shores of Whakatāne to hop aboard the boat to Moutohorā for an epic guided tour of the sanctuary. Here, you’ll bush walk through forest-like landscapes, visit a kekeno / NZ fur seal colony and take a dip in a hot water beach at Onepū / Sulphur Bay. When arriving and leaving Moutohorā, remember to check clothing, bags and shoes for soil and seeds and abide by the ‘leave no trace’ policy to protect the Island. Back in town, Cafe Awa is a favourite food spot among locals and also offers a wide range of accommodation options. Before leaving Whakatāne, see the best of the area with a ride onboard a self-driven rail-cart at Awakeri Rail Adventures. Travel down a historic rail line track and choose between four journeys, each offering a unique experience that attracts visitors from all over the globe.
Ōpōtiki
40 minutes in the rental car from Whakatāne, head to Ōpōtiki for a dose of natural beauty, Māori history and native flora. A range of tramping trails are on offer at the Waioeka Gorge Scenic Reserve, not too far from town, with the Little Manganuku Track winding past waterfalls, and the less challenging Tauranga Loop Track which crosses over the historic Tauranga Bridge. Take some time out here to connect with nature and close your eyes to hear the rushing water of the Opato Stream and native bird calls. If you’re itching for a beach day, head to Waiotahe Beach for a peaceful picnic on the shore. Just outside of town, visit the Hukutaia Domain to admire Taketakerau - the giant Puriri tree which is estimated to be 2000 to 2500 years old. Here you can embark on short walks or simply spend time under the cool canopies.

Te Kaha and Beyond
The rest of the drive from Ōpōtiki to Gisborne is enveloped in wilderness. With small towns few and far between, stock up on snacks before hitting the road again. An hour along the Coast from Ōpōtiki, Te Kaha offers passersby a peaceful spot to stop over and take a stroll along the beach. For a unique experience, call ahead and book a trek on horseback along the shore with StandFast Horse Treks. As you journey closer to the Bay of Plenty / Gisborne border, Raukokore is an excellent place to park the rental car and wander around, especially for lovers of architecture. The Anglican Church of Raukokore is open to visitors, encouraging those passing through the town to admire the stunning building which features stained glass windows and a light-filled interior.
Gisborne
If you’re travelling this side of the coast overnight, prepare to see the first sunrise in the world as this marks the most Eastern point of New Zealand. As you arrive in Gisborne, rolling hills and forestscapes quickly transform into expansive vineyards and golden beaches, evoking a feeling of community and culture. After your grand journey through the countryside and coastline, it’s time for a well-deserved rest and refreshment, and the best place to do so is at the Sunshine Brewery. Here you can get a taste of ‘Gizzy’s’ favourite brew at NZ’s oldest independent brewery and relax with a bite to eat. In town, discover the area’s importance and local history at the Tairāwhiti Museum Te Whare Taonga o Te Tairāwhiti or get off the grid and embrace country life with a farm stay at Station Life in Rural NZ.
