Travelling Between Islands
New Zealand Self Drive Holidays
If you're driving around our country, travelling between the North and South islands involves a relaxing ferry ride across Cook Strait, a 30km stretch of water bordered in the south by Picton and the stunning scenery of the Sounds and in the north with the cultural excitement of Wellington city. This ferry crossing normally takes about 3 hours.
We have an office at the ferry terminals in Picton and in Wellington. If you plan to tour both islands you won't have to worry about the ferry expense of taking the car across.
Tell us when you plan to cross from one island to the other when booking. Then drop your car at the terminal on one side, take the ferry across and we'll have another car waiting for you when you arrive. It's that easy.
Ferry timetables do vary and are subject to change without notice (the sea does not always stick to the plan). You can check the latest timetable or make a ferry booking either here or here.
Single trip multi-hire
Our 'multi-hire' offer has been developed so you can cost-effectively have two or more hires as part of the same journey. This means you can enjoy a lower daily rental rate – because you pay for the combined total of rental days as if it were one rental.
This means that, for example, if you were flying into Auckland and planned to rent a car for 7 days in the North Island, followed, 24 hours later, by 10 days in the South Island, you'll only pay a rate equivalent to one 17 day continuous rental.
