Car Rental Picton Ferry Terminal

The Picton Ferry Terminal is located just outside Picton CBD, and is used to travel between the two main islands of New Zealand - making it the gateway to Wellington and the North Island. But, just because people use Picton to travel between islands doesn’t mean it isn’t a hot spot to travel in its own right. You’re going to want to do more than just travel through Picton. With restaurants, galleries, charming cafes and interesting speciality shops, Picton has an abundance of activities.

Picton is the heart of the Marlborough Sounds, 1,500 kilometres of coastline that offers some of the best boat rides and water fun on earth. The Marlborough Sounds are made up of 4 sounds - sounds are smaller bodies of water connected to larger seas or oceans, in the case of Marlborough, it is connected to the Pacific Ocean.  The sounds are great for dolphin watching, with these intelligent mammals often coming right up to peers, boats and people. Along the sounds’ coastlines, you will find many lodges, homes, and places to stay. If you really want to escape, some of these homes are only accessible via water, giving a true feeling of being isolated in nature while in the comfort of a lodge. Sample some of the local seafood delicacies, with oysters, muscles and salmon being at the top of the list.

Pick your Spot in Picton and Drive in Your Rental Car

Sometimes in order to walk, you have to drive. Many of the best walking trails around the Marlborough Sounds require a rental car to drive you there first. The most popular walk is the Queen Charlotte Track. The Queen Charlotte Track is regarded as one of the best walks on the planet and offers fantastic views of the sounds. It is accessible within an hour and a half drive of Picton and offers 73.5 kilometres of walking tracks. Quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger and stay at one of the lodges, resorts and B&Bs along the track. Try the local seafood and wine produced in the area. Walk by stunning views of the sound, with varying landscapes, from inlets to high peaks. Enjoy a variety of native bushland plants, and if you’re lucky, you might spot some of the native sound animal species (including dolphins). It really doesn’t get any better than a beautiful drive along the coast to enjoy incredible scenery on foot. If you plan to stay overnight on the track, make sure you pre-book your accommodation, but camping out under the stars is also an option.

The Marlborough Sounds offer many walks and places to drive and views to soak in. Often the drive is just as enjoyable as the view at the end of it.

Picton-perfect Atmosphere to Enjoy in Your Hire Car

Drive around in your hire car to some of the hot spots in Picton. The Picton foreshore is full of places to eat, a mini-golf course and a beach to stroll along. If you keep walking along the foreshore, you will end up at the EcoWorld Aquarium, home to seahorses, weta, turtles and other animal species. There are many shops, cafes, and restaurants to enjoy in the Picton area. Many of the wineries offer cellar door tours, tastings, and overnight accommodation. These tours can range from half-day, full-day and beyond. Marlborough is responsible for over 65% of the total wine production in New Zealand. Travelling around Picton, the wine presence in the area is apparent, with rolling fields of grapes. There are more than 10 separate wineries, all within driving distance of Picton Ferry Terminal and Picton CBD.
