Getting the most out of a city break doesn’t mean you have to break the bank. If you’re looking for free things to do in Auckland, we’ve got you covered because there are heaps of fun activities and attractions in the city of sails that won’t cost you a thing. Just take a look at some of the options below…
Movies in Parks
Love movies but hate the hefty price tag? Seeing one is free thanks to Auckland Council.
Throughout the summer months, you can catch movies under the stars in parks across the city. From old favourites like ‘When Harry Met Sally’ to new releases, there’s a family friendly flick for you.
Just remember to pack a blanket, picnic, torch and some warm clothes. Check out the show times here.
Music in Parks
Fancy yourself more or a muso than a film buff? Auckland Council has you sorted there too, because just like you can catch movies in parks, you can treat your ears to kiwi music with the Music in Parks series across summer.
With local acts playing everything from jazz to hip hop, indie or kids’ music, you’re sure to find something that peaks your interest in their line-up. Take a look here to see what’s coming up.
Get your walk on
Auckland has many great walks dotted across the region, and there is often no better way to explore a place.
Stop and smell the flowers at Auckland’s beautiful Botanic Gardens. With over 10,000 plants from around the world there is plenty to look at including impressive magnolias, perennials and conifers.
You can even experience what it’s like to go bush in New Zealand by walking through the Native Forest, where lush palms, ferns and native birds are aplenty.
Despite the name, Goat Island is actually a marine reserve renowned for its great scuba diving and snorkelling.
Goat Island also offers great spots for swimming, kayaking and walking, and is popular with those young or old.
Auckland Art Gallery
Thousands of works of art, exciting and interactive exhibitions, and interesting and informative talks – there aren’t many places that can boast all that for free, but this gallery can.
Have a nosy at what’s on here, and then take a mosey on down to enjoy hours of free fun.
It wouldn’t be a visit to the City of Sails without a wander around Wynyard.
To the west of Auckland’s viaduct, it’s an ideal spot to wonder at super yachts, enjoy fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants or just take a stroll beside the water’s edge.
There are often free activity workshops on Sundays for kids too, so they can play, create, make and problem solve the day away.
Just a hop, skip and a jump from Wynyard Quarter is Silo Park, a popular park under the gaze of a 35 metre Golden Bay cement silo.
Famous for its food trucks, markets and movies, Silo Park offers plenty to do, and you can even climb the gantry for fantastic views of the city.
