Multi Island travel is when you are travelling across the North & South Island in New Zealand which is separated by the Cook Strait.

Multi-island travel is still possible by making two separate bookings for the whole journey, one for each island.

Single bookings that include rentals on both islands is no longer possible.

Vehicles must be returned to the original rental Island and we will charge a relocation fee of up to $1000 NZD + GST if this does not occur.

The rental process remains the same if your rental involves travelling on both islands but starting and ending on the same. Please note you will be liable for the ferry cross over costs.

RENTALS START ON ONE ISLAND, AND ENDING ON THE OTHER

Make your booking from where you plan to begin and end your journey.

Example of booking for North to South Island travel:

Pick-up at any preferred location on the North Island, and return at Wellington Interislander Ferry Terminal,
Pick-up at Picton Interislander Ferry Terminal and return at any preferred location on the South Island.

Example of booking for South to North Island travel:

Pick-up at any preferred location on the South Island, and return at Picton Interislander Ferry Terminal,
Pick-up at Wellington Interislander Ferry Terminal and return at any preferred location on the North Island.

If you change your cross over travel dates, you will need to contact your travel agent or our reservations team to adjust your booking dates and times to ensure a seamless experience crossing the islands.

A fee will apply if the vehicle is not returned to the original island the rental started on. We will charge you for the actual cost of relocating the vehicle, up to a maximum of NZD$1,000.00 + GST

RENTALS START AND END ON THE SAME ISLAND, BUT TRAVEL ON BOTH.

Keep the same vehicle for the whole trip duration and remember that you must pay for the vehicle on two ferry trips.

A fee will apply if the vehicle is not returned to the original island the rental started on. We will charge you for the actual cost of relocating the vehicle, up to a maximum of NZD$1,000.00 + GST

CHANGE OF PLANS?

Contact your booking agent or central reservations for Thrifty at least 5 days before your ferry crossing, if any changes to the cross-over date have occurred. We cannot guarantee vehicle availability if we haven’t been advised of any changes to your booking. Book your ferry crossing early and check your rental agreement, for any changes.
