How to Make the Most of Wellington in a Weekend
Short on time but big on curiosity? This two-day guide to Wellington shows you how to experience the capital’s best food, culture, and scenery—with freedom and flexibility.

Wellington’s got a rep for being cool—and for good reason. It’s compact, creative, full of great food, and nestled between hills and a harbour in a way that makes every photo look like a postcard. You can cover a lot of ground in just a weekend here, especially with a Thrifty rental car to help you dip in and out of the city, discover lesser-known corners, and move at your own pace. Here's how to get the most out of 48 hours in the capital.

Day One: Coffee, Culture and a Windy Hilltop
Start the morning like a Wellingtonian—with strong coffee. Cuba Street is the obvious place to begin. Grab a flat white from Fidel’s or Customs (both local favourites), then wander the street’s colourful stretch of vintage stores, street art, and indie bookshops.
From there, head to Te Papa, the national museum, which is genuinely worth a few hours of your time. It’s free, packed with interactive exhibits, and gives you a crash course in everything from Māori culture to earthquake engineering. When you’re done, take a slow walk along the waterfront or rent a scooter to zip around Oriental Bay.
In the afternoon, hop in your rental car and drive up to Mount Victoria Lookout. The views stretch across the whole harbour and are especially magical at golden hour. Bring snacks if you're the picnic type.
For dinner, head back into the city and book a table at Loretta or Ortega Fish Shack. Both do beautiful, seasonal menus with a relaxed vibe—exactly what you want after a full day on your feet.

Day Two: Coastal Drives and Hidden Gems
Start your day with a quick drive around the bays. The coastal road from Oriental Bay to Scorching Bay is a stunner, with plenty of spots to pull over for photos or a quick dip if the weather’s on your side. Grab breakfast at Scorch-O-Rama, a quirky little café with sea views and a menu that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
From there, you can either keep following the coast around to Shelly Bay, or loop inland toward Wrights Hill Fortress if you’re into history, tunnels, and a bit of a spooky vibe.
If you’re keen to stretch your legs, Zealandia is a short drive from the city centre and well worth the detour. It’s a massive fenced sanctuary that protects native birds, reptiles, and plants—and feels a world away from the buzz of the CBD.
For lunch, head to Moore Wilson’s and put together your own picnic from their deli and fresh produce sections, or grab something hot from their pop-up food vendors outside. Then, depending on your energy level, either dive back into the city’s bar and gallery scene or take your time winding up the day with a quiet drink at The Library or Golding’s Free Dive.
One Weekend, Zero Regrets
Wellington punches well above its weight when it comes to food, views, and things to do. You don’t need weeks here—but you’ll wish you had them. With Thrifty, you can make the most of your time, avoid rigid schedules, and see the side of the city that locals love best. Wherever you go, the hills will be steep, the weather unpredictable—but the stories (and meals) will be worth it.
