Surf the Waves Like A Pro
It’s beaches galore in the coastal village of Raglan. If you’re looking for endless stretches of sand met by rolling turquoise waves, you’ve come to the right place. The number one beach to check out while you’re adventuring around this slice of paradise is Manu Bay. One of the most famous beaches in the region and located just west of the town’s centre, Manu Bay has become a bit of a legend in itself due to many believing that Manu boasts the longest, most accessible and consistent left-hand break in the world. Rumour has it, if you’re skilled enough to catch one of these legendary waves, you can cruise for up to two kilometres! If Manu Bay looks familiar, it’s because it’s also been featured in cult surfing movie Endless Summer. Ruapuke Beach is another surfer’s paradise, home to uncrowded waves with massive force. Keen surfers can also check out Whale Bay/Te Whaanga, but keep in mind that this bay isn’t for beginners. Monstrous waves at Whale Bay make for catching some epic breaks in the surf, although the beach is also great for a stroll if you’re not up for the challenge. Other beaches to check out if you’re just looking for a paddle or a walk include Ngarunui (Ocean) Beach (one of the famous black sand beaches) and Papahua Beach.
Marvel in Awe at Raglan’s Waterfalls
Whether you’re looking for an activity to break up all the surfing or the idea of a bushwalk is more your speed, great waterfalls are easy to find all over town. You barely even need to leave Raglan to continue to experience some of the jaw-dropping beauty that this slice of paradise is home to. The most iconic of all Raglan’s waterfalls that is a must-visit when you’re passing through is Bridal Veil Falls/Wairēinga. Standing at a whopping 55 metres tall, you can gape at these falls from both the top and the bottom. Only a ten minute walk from the carpark, some say that the walk to reach the falls is as spectacular as Bridal Veil itself. The viewing platform makes it easy to really take in the sensational outlook, with the falls set against a backdrop of lush bush that extends out into the town of Raglan. While a bit further away (half an hour drive from the centre of Raglan), Karakariki Scenic Reserve is another beauty to check out on your hunt for waterfalls. Follow the tracks and across the suspension bridges and you’ll be met with a waterfall that, although is on the smaller size, has a lot of heart. The serene setting by the water makes for the perfect picnic spot as you dip your feet in the water and cool down to the sound of nature breathing life into the environment around you.
