WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT INTER-ISLAND RENTALS

To see the best of New Zealand, explore both the North and South Islands. Separated by Cook Strait, regular inter-island ferry services connect the two Islands and Thrifty has depots right on the main Interislander Ferry terminal at Wellington and Picton

A booking can be made starting on one Island and ending on another, however our vehicles are not permitted to cross between the Islands. We want your Cook Strait crossover between the North Island and South Island to be seamless so please check the information below

STARTING ON ONE ISLAND, ENDING ON THE OTHER

• Make your booking from where you plan to begin and end your journey
• Provide the details of when you plan to cross between the islands in the comments section of your booking including ferry date and time, without this information we are unable to guarantee a vehicle will be available for you.

PLANS CHANGE?

Book your ferry crossing early and check your rental agreement, if your cross over date has changed call us 5 days before your ferry on 0800 501 301. If we are not advised of changes, we cannot guarantee a vehicle will be available.

Please note a fee will apply if the vehicle is not returned to the same island the rental started on. Thrifty will charge for the actual cost of relocating the vehicle, up to a maximum of NZD$1,000.00 + GST

STARTING AND ENDING ON THE SAME ISLAND, BUT TRAVELLING ON BOTH

We recommend you keep the same vehicle for the whole duration of your trip just bear in mind you will need to pay for the vehicle on two ferry trips.

Please note a fee will apply if the vehicle is not returned to the same island the rental started on.

Thrifty will charge for the actual cost of relocating the vehicle, up to a maximum of NZD$1,000.00 + GST.
